Biohub – Cell Tracking During Development
Kaggle (sponsored by Chan Zuckerberg Biohub)
A Kaggle Research competition sponsored by the nonprofit CZ Biohub, to detect and track zebrafish cells through 3D space and time using the largest publicly available open-license cell-tracking dataset.
Who it's really for. Anyone with a Kaggle account and the machine learning skills to work with 3D microscopy data over time: computer vision researchers, graduate students, and applied ML teams looking for a hard, well-defined problem with a nonprofit sponsor. There is no organizational eligibility test; individuals and teams compete on equal footing, which makes this one of the most open items on ImpactOpen.
What you get. A share of a $60,000 prize pool and, arguably more important, access to the largest publicly available open-license cell-tracking dataset, released by the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub. Strong leaderboard finishes are visible to the Biohub and to the broader computational biology community.
How to apply and what to watch. Register on Kaggle and join the competition; submissions close on 29 September 2026. This is a code competition, so notebooks run within Kaggle's compute limits and you should check the runtime rules before designing your approach. For other open data competitions with a social purpose, see the Zindi challenges on the challenges page.
