AI for good challenges, prizes and competitions
Prize-based opportunities where the money follows a submission rather than a proposal: data science competitions, innovation challenges and pitch competitions built around a social impact problem. They range from small Zindi and Kaggle prizes that anyone with a laptop can enter to multi-million-dollar Google.org and XPRIZE challenges aimed at organizations.
Two things make challenges different from the rest of ImpactOpen. First, eligibility is usually wide open: most Zindi and Kaggle competitions accept any registered user anywhere, which makes them the most accessible route for individual technologists and student teams in the Global South. Second, the real value is often the dataset and the visibility rather than the prize; several Zindi challenges here are run with ITU AI for Good, FAO or Google Research, and strong entrants get noticed.
ITU's AI for Good Innovation Factory is the standing pitch competition for AI startups tackling development challenges, with monthly sessions through May 2027 and a Geneva grand finale. WFP's Innovation Challenge reviews on a rolling basis and pairs prize money with an accelerator.
